More on this - an indication that it cost hundreds of thousands to re-aquire, that the charter is in OE and that it will be on display from mid-June at the Beaney Art Gallery and Museum.

Acquisition of another early 11th C. charter plus a list of what they hold and a promise of a public lecture on the charters later this year.

LINKS / Re: A blog about OE Riddles

......... Oh, and... Linden, please let me know your opinion.

Hello Iohannes - I have not visited the Gegaderung much for some weeks so apologies for the late response.
The blog site on the Exeter Book riddles looks as if it might be very interesting as it develops. It's good to see a mention of Cochran's paper on riddle 4 - her argument that 'wearm lim' refers to 'warm mud' is right on the button in my opinion as is her solution of ploughing.
I look forward to the further development of the site.

I wonder if we can come up with any more horse jokes...
'Fæt-hengest' (potted horse) and 'frid-hengest' (fried horse) - Exeter Book riddle 22 - sound very tasty.

General Discussion / Re: Numbers and calculation
« on: February 01, 2013, 10:12:31 PM »
There have been various studies that show that many animals have the ability to recognise the difference between numbers.  Whether this qualifies as 'counting' or is some form of pattern recognition has also been discussed.  Whatever the method used, it has been shown frequently that animals can recognise when an addition or subtraction is made to a set of objects.   This is just one article on the subject.  There have been many over the past few decades.  http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=how-animals-have-the-ability-to-count

I've just received a leaflet through the post with advance notice of a research update exhibition at Southend's central museum running from 5th March to 1st June.  Talks from specialist speakers are also promised.  There is as yet no info on this on the museum website so watch this space (and add any updates you come across please).

Old English Language / Re: Toilet/Lavatory/Loo/Nettie etc

It would seem that our ancestors had just as many variants for ‘the smallest room’ as today’s folk.
Among the words for a ‘privy’ listed in Bosworth and Toller - apart from ‘gang-ern’ are ‘ears-gang‘, ‘forþ-gang‘, ‘gang/geng’, ‘genge’, ‘grepe‘, ‘fel-tun‘, ‘forþ-gang‘,‘gang-pyt(t)’, ‘gang-setl‘, ‘gang-tun’, ‘gold-hord-hus’ and ‘ut-gang’.
The actual seat on which you might sit was called a ‘gang-setl’ or ‘gang-stol’.
The unfortunate cleaner of the place was called a ‘gang-feormere’.
The lowermost deck of the ark was described as containing the ‘gangpyt’ and ‘myxen’ interpreted in Bosworth & Toller as the privy and dunghill respectively.
‘Earsgang is - according to B&T, used in the leechdoms both as the place of excretion (twice) and the act of excretion.
