How do I get AS characters on keyboard?
« on: January 18, 2012, 03:11:23 PM »
I'd be very grateful if someone could let me know how to get the thorn, eth, ash and diphthongs on my keyboard as I've just started the correspondence course and I'm going to need them.

Thanks.

If you are using Microsoft Word use the top tab 'insert'. Look over to the far right of the tool bar and you will have 'symbols' appear. On my version it has an omega sign on it. Click onto that and you can find
đæÆőéÞĐþ   etc. Click on one and hit 'insert' and hey presto!

I agree with process Blackdragon suggests although the first time you have hunt through the different characters in more symbols, then, once used, they appear in the first list. In the fonts I use I get the nicer ð. You will also need macrons for the correspondence course. You will find vowels with macrons in the same way.

Ooh, I always used to go to the character map. This way's much better. I've found that you can customize your keyboard as well. Don't know if I'll do that, unless I can find an easy way to go back to default settings.

--- -many thanks, all.   I've found the insert and the letters although I can't see the capital Thorn, unless it's a case of can't see it for looking.   If it's not there is it permissable to use TH?   Another I can't see is the capital W although I know it isn't used much.

Horsa:  what's the character map?   One thing about using Microsoft Word is that I might also want to use the characters in e.mails which would be difficult.

These are capital thorn, lower case thorn, lower case wynn and capital wynn from the insert symbols Þ þ ƿ Ƿ. I was using the times Roman font - they might look a bit different in other fonts.
The thorns were in Latin-1Supplement and the wynns in Latin Extended-B.
Write this in microsoft word, copy and paste into your email.
To paste into the email you can use Ctrl v.
It might be easier to write the whole email in microsoft word, copy and then paste into email.

Having not long joined the forum, I've just read this topic and FWIW there's another way to get Þ etc. without needing to open Word, so it's useful if you post from your phone or netbook or other device that doesn't have an office suite. I believe it will also work in Windows, OSX and Linux.

All characters can be written using the Alt key (hold it down) plus a numeric code, which you need to enter using the number keypad of a full size keyboard or the 'blue' number keys on a laptop / small keyboard. When you let go of the alt key, you'll see your AS character. Don't type the '+'.
Alt + 0230 is æ
Alt + 0198 is Æ
Alt + 0254 is þ
Alt + 0222 is Þ
Alt + 0240 is ð
Alt + 0208 is Ð
If that seems a lot to remember, you can always make a note of the codes e.g. in Blackberry Notes, and then you don't need to have Word or OpenOffice open just to type a quick comment.  :)
