Terms and Conditions for The English Companions Gathering

If you agree to the terms and conditions stated below, press the "Agree" button. Otherwise, press "Cancel".

Purpose of the Gegaderung

This community portal is intended mainly for use by members of Ða Engliscan Gesiðas, although non-members who share similar interests and agree to abide by the rules of the Gegaderung are welcome to participate.

The Gegaderung is a means of enabling discussion and dissemination of information concerning any aspects of Anglo-Saxon culture. This may include, but is not limited to, history, art, religion, language and literature. As we live in the 21st Century it is inevitable that much of the information disseminated will pertain to the modern world in such areas as events, conservation, archæology, education, publications etc., especially as it is a prime objective of Ða Engliscan Gesiðas to bring an understanding and appreciation of Anglo-Saxon Culture to as wide a public as possible. Some topics, however, will not be tolerated; anything which fosters or promotes racism or religious intolerance will be disallowed and the offending individual will risk revocation of membership to the Gegaderung.

The Gegaderung may contain links to other web sites and files. I have no control over the content and can not ensure it will not be offensive or objectionable. I will, however, remove links to material that I feel is inappropriate as I become aware of them.

Any user who finds material posted by another user objectionable is encouraged to contact us via email. We are authorized by you to remove or modify any data submitted by you to these forums for any reason we feel constitutes a violation of our policies, whether stated, implied or not.

The Gesiðas Gegaderung is not moderated in the sense that a moderator has to approve each message before it is posted to the relevant topic. Members begin posting to any of the appropriate discussions as soon as the registration and activation procedure is complete.

It is my ambition to maintain a decent level of discussion on the Gegaderung and to make sure that our debates are conducted in a civil manner. The purpose of the Gegaderung is to provide an on-line meeting place for Gesiðas, to popularise Anglo-Saxon studies and to help people who are interested in the various linguistic, cultural and historical aspects of AS scholarship. As the administrator of the list, I reserve the right to judge whether your postings are conducive to that purpose or not. If I find that a particular poster's behaviour is wilfully counterproductive, I shall react by issuing a warning. If the warning has no effect, the poster is likely to be excluded from posting for about two weeks. Recidivists may expect a longer probation period. Since I want administrative and disciplinary problems to be handled as discreetly as possible, any complaints, concerns or suggestions regarding such matters should be sent to me either by e-mail or Private Message.

Forbeodan

Here is a list of things that are explicitly forbidden on the Gegaderung. Infraction will result in disciplinary action on my part, from a warning to immediate exclusion from the Gegaderung, depending on the seriousness of the offence. It is recommended that Gegaderung members should save this list for future reference.

  1. Spam
Anyone caught spamming (that is, posting off-topic commercial advertisements or other unwanted junk) will be excluded from the Gegaderung without warning.
  2. Pseudoscience
While the discussion of controversial issues is welcome on the Gegaderung, there are certain limits that I should like to be observed. I am not going to encourage racist propaganda, speculation about the links between Old English and the language spoken in Atlantis, whether Penda really did have Apache helicopters, or anything that obviously sinks below the level at which serious discussion is possible.
  3. Idées fixes
Please do not treat the Gegaderung as your private forum. Posters who attempt to publicise their private obsessions had better look for some other audience. Anyone who tries to dominate the discussion by sending an immoderate number of messages on a single topic will hear from me. In the interest of the community I may lock, shut down or archive a tired thread. In such cases, if you want to protest or ask me to re-open the thread, please get in touch with me off-list.
  4. Flaming, trolling and ad hominem attacks
Please avoid deliberate rudeness, aggressive language, addressing the personalities of other members rather than their arguments, and other forms of disruptive behaviour. Posters who seem to enjoy irritating other participants or provoking violent exchanges will be given time out at short notice. If you feel provoked or insulted by somebody else, please don't hesitate to complain to me by e-mail or Private Message rather than repay insults in kind.
  5. Flogging dead horses
I also wish to discourage attempts to resurrect an old or closed topic if the poster has no fresh ideas to contribute. The forums archive is searchable (at least in theory), and before you raise a topic you should at least try to check if it has not been discussed in the past months.

Recommendations for Posting
  1. Think before you post. Remember that communication via the Gegaderung is very different from a face-to-face discussion - there is no body language or voice tonal quality to help in communication, only the bare words that you write. Before hitting the 'Post New Reply' button, read what you have just written and then read it again. It is far more likely that a hurried, terse, or unconsidered posting will cause offence than a considered response. If there is any doubt over how your posting may be interpreted use emoticons (smilies) - they can go a long way toward ameliorating a potentially tense interchange.
  2. Avoid sending attachments with your postings. Any pictures, Word documents, PDF files, etc. that you'd like to share with other Gegaderung members should be submitted as Downloads.
  3. When responding to others' postings, quote only those fragments of the original message that you want to reply to. In particular, do not quote whole threads. Make sure that the quotations are properly marked, so that one can easily see who wrote what.

The above prohibitions and recommendations are provisional and liable to change at any time. I welcome any suggestions concerning further improvements - in the appropriate forum, of course! In all things remember, though – the decision of the Weard is final.
