Firsby Saxon Village Project

Anglo-Saxon Hall under construction (38k)

An Anglo-Saxon house takes shape in Lincolnshire!

Steve and Judith Jones, members of Ða Engliscan Gesiþas living ten miles north of Lincoln, are building a replica Anglo-Saxon period hall using authentic materials and techniques. Steve and Judith plan to make the house into a partially-defended settlement on a four acre site. This will be run as a study centre for the late Saxon/Viking period and an ancient crafts centre. They will also be making and firing pots of the period, smelting, forging and demonstrating crafts.

After two years of planning and preparation, by early in June 1996 the roof timbers were almost complete, as the photograph above shows.

By May 1997 the structure and the wattle is nearly complete, as the photograph below shows, with only the daub, panelling and the rest of the thatch left to install.

Much effort has been put into the project to create a building which is right for the times as well as the area. The plans, methods and tools have all been extensively researched. Oak joints have been axed into shape and the roof secured by peg and twine, with immaculate attention to detail!
