Autumn diary for 2025

The English Companions will be pitching their tent at a number of events in the coming weeks, so if you want to find us here is how to do it. We would love to see you and chat about all things Anglo-Saxon!

Saturday 4 October, 1066 Festival, Stamford Bridge, 11am – 4pm

Commemorating the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Held at Stamford Bridge, East Yorkshire. Use Riverside Car Park, YO41 1BR. Admission £5.

Sunday 12 October, Battle of Byland Commemoration Event, Sutton Bank ,10am – 4pm

The Battle of Byland was on 14 October 1322, and the Companions will be on site to chat about another battle on the same day in 1066 at Hastings. Sutton Bank National Park Centre, Sutton Bank, Thirsk YO7 2EH. Free admission, but charge for car park.

Sunday 26 October, Alfred Fest, Wantage, 11am – 3pm

A celebration of Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, who was born in Wantage and died on 26 October 899. Held in Wantage, Oxfordshire OX12 9BX. District Council Car Parks can be found at Portway, Mill Street Under Croft & Limborough Road. Wantage car parks – Vale of White Horse District Council.

Commemorations

Members will be laying a wreath at Battle Abbey on 14 October in memory of those killed at Hastings in 1066.

Waltham Abbey’s King Harold Festival on Saturday 12 October will also hold a flower-placing ceremony at Harold’s memorial in the churchyard.

Regular social zoom events

There is a regular zoom social for all members to chat and share progress on personal projects or hear about books, talks or other events that gesithas have attended or plan to attend.

The Members’ Zoom socials usually take place at 4.30pm UK time to accommodate West Coast USA through to Europe and as far east as possible:

A social zoom is also arranged regularly by the Yorkshire Companions group, but is open to all members. Contact the Yorkshire group for details.
